Guide to Bassano del Grappa, northern Italy PDF Print E-mail
Bassano sits in a stunning location by the River Brenta with Monte Grappa in the background. It is about 35 kilometres north east of Vicenza. The town's symbols are said to be the Palladian bridge, white asparagus, ceramics and the Grappa liqueur.  I visited the town for the day in February 2005.  I really liked the location, the fresh air, the fast flowing river and the picturesque bridge.  If you like to be slightly off the tourist track and would prefer a more rural setting for short break or as a base for a touring holiday, Bassano is ideal.
Guide to Besalu, northern Spain PDF Print E-mail
Besalu is a lovely medieval town.  The 12th century Roman bridge over to the town is a real landmark(photo).  The town sits where the Rivers Fluvia and Capadella meet.  If you are looking for a picturesque inland setting for a few days, Besalu is an ideal choice. It would take under an hour to drive from Girona airport,, well served by Ryanair flights from all over Europe.  There is a lot to do and see in the area, the Garrotxa Volcanic Park, the Dali Museum in Figueres, the coast, and the city of Girona.

Wild Parrots of Irena Street PDF Print E-mail
Dawn. I stood waiting, watching on my roof deck for the moring sun to break over the horizon. I waited for them to wake up. Then, shortly after sunrise, stillness gave way to chatter in a gently swaying palm tree. Soon, about 50 parrots emerged from their roost, squawking as they circled above me in the early morning sky. Thirty minutes later, they disappeared from sight.
